Sunnyside plans tribute to former resident, actress Lilia Skala

After arriving in Sunnyside, Queens from Austria in 1939, Lilia Skala, who knew no English, took a job at a zipper factory in Long Island City.

About two decades later, she appeared in “Lilies of the Field” with Sidney Poitier and earned an Academy Award nomination for her performance.

This weekend, the Sunnyside Gardens Preservation Alliance unveils a National Register plaque at 39-19 49th St. recognizing its famous former resident.

As part of the ceremony, Skala’s granddaughter, actress/playwright Libby Skala, performs her one-woman show about her grandmother, “LILIA!”

Lilia, was 64 years old, when her movie career took off. She also appeared in the films, “Charly,” “Ship of Fools,” and even “Flashdance.”

The plaque unveiling is Saturday, Oct. 26, at 4:30 p.m. Libby’s performance takes place at 7 p.m. at Sunnyside Reformed Church, 48-03 Skillman Ave.
